Counterfeit Check Scams

Counterfeit checks represent a growing problem to both financial services companies and the general public. Such checks can be in amounts ranging from a few thousand dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars (or more) and are usually issued as part of some form of advanced payment scam. The counterfeit checks can look like personal checks, business checks, Postal money orders or even official bank checks.

The American Bankers Association, in conjunction with other industry associations, has created a website ( that describes some of the common scams under which counterfeit checks may be issued and sent to unsuspecting victims. While this site provides information on some of the common scams, it is not necessarily an all-inclusive list of all kinds of scams. Please take a minute to view this web site.
